Why I’m Taking a Break from Design

Having a profession as a creative person can get a little challenging at times! You are always faced with that thought you have about not being good enough and will people actually like what you have to offer as a designer. Designers must constantly remain current, whether it’s a new font that came out or a new update in the Adobe creative suite it’s always something that you can find yourself trying to “catch up” on. Whatever the case may be, this profession is not for the faint at heart. My sister told me something a long time ago when I was trying to figure out what I wanted to go to college for that stuck with me. She said “Whatever you decide to go to school for, make sure that you like doing it and that it is something that you don’t mind staying up all night to do.

I currently work part-time at an advertising agency in Huntersville, North Carolina. With us being on a waiting period from our clients, it gives me down time. With so much time on my hands, I had a chance to travel a little and to focus on projects that I wanted to work on more. Down time is so important for a creative to have. It gives you the chance to step back, take a breather, and re-evaluate your life and what you want to chance. One of my weaker areas in design that I thought that could use improvement on, I chose to give myself a little more to that area more. I got a chance to step back from the hustle and bustle of my day to day routine and actually explore more styles of design that I don’t get a chance to see as. I actually found out that I enjoy that style of design and gave it a try. I guess you can call it me becoming cultured when it comes to design lol. Below is a brand that I recently created which I am proud to create because I took a chance on it. I gleaned from another designer whose’s target market is totally different from mine but I enjoyed the simplicity of what her design had to offer. If her style of design was a person, it would be Phylicia Rashad. Just by walking into a room and not even saying a word, her elegance speaks volumes and demands attention. At that moment it became my muse. I was taken back. I then decided! I have to do something with this inspiration. The branding on the link below is a result of my inspiration.
